The Sacredness and Legend of the Phra Kamphaeng Thung Setthi Amulet.
In the past, the land of Kamphaeng Phet was under the influence of the Khmer until the year 1890 AD, when the Phra Ruang Dynasty came to drive out the Khmer and restored the city, changing its name to “Nakhon Chum,” which became a subordinate city. It remained this way until the reign of King Borom Trailokkanat, who renamed it Kamphaeng Phet. Since then, this city became an important city, a frontier town that had to face continuous wars until the Thonburi era. However, there was a period when Nakhon Chum was a peaceful city, filled with a great atmosphere of Buddhism, as evidenced by the inscription on Stone Tablet No. 3, which states that King Maha Thammaracha Litai established the Phra Borom That and planted the Phra Si Maha Bodhi tree, as well as performed many royal Buddhist merit-making activities in Nakhon Chum during the year 1900 AD. It is therefore assumed that during this period, the amulet known as the Phra Kamphaeng Sum Kao, a masterpiece of the city of Kamphaeng Phet, which possesses great Buddhist art and merits of immense power, emerged. This amulet was classified among the Benjapakee (Five Great Amulets).
What are the spiritual qualities of the Phra Sum Kao amulet?
The Phra Phim Sum Kao is said by experts to be an early Sukhothai-style artwork (similar to Wat Takhwan or a blend of Sukhothai and Sri Lankan styles). It is widely agreed upon that it is more magnificent and beautiful than all the Phra Krut Thung Setthi amulets. It is believed to hold Buddhist powers in terms of protection from dangers and great compassion, bringing wealth and prosperity. It is even said that “if you have it, you won’t be poor.” The sacred experience of the Phra Rod Luang of Hariphunchai from the year 2015 is also shared.
The Belief in the Merit Power of the Phra Sum Kao Amulet.
- The Phra Sum Kao Black has great power and influence in terms of charm, attracting people, and is believed to provide invulnerability. It is depicted as a sitting Buddha with its hands resting on its lap, without being burnt, and has a coating of love and affection over the entire image.
- The Phra Sum Kao Red, White, and Green have high power, especially in terms of charm and attraction. They share the same appearance as the black version, but the red Phra Sum Kao is burned and then rubbed with herbal powder, giving it a beautiful reddish color. The material is more durable and resilient than the black version. It can still be found in the homes of prominent families in Kamphaeng Phet.
